WSP Detectives Seek Witnesses to a Fatal Hit and Run Collision

On November 22, 2017 at approximately 7:00p.m, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) was dispatched to a disabled vehicle northbound (NB) Interstate 5 (I-5) just north of George Hopper Road in Skagit County. A WSP Trooper arrived to assist; upon her arrival she observed a male on the shoulder of the roadway that had been struck by a vehicle. Despite several attempts to revive the male by the trooper, the male died at the scene.

The male was a 44 year old Good Samaritan from Burlington that had stopped to assist the disabled vehicle.  It was determined that the male had stopped his vehicle on the on-ramp from George Hopper Road to NB I-5 and attempted to cross the ramp when he was struck by an unknown pickup truck. Investigators believe the pickup truck may have sustained damage to a light(s) on the right front passenger side. Numerous pieces of lighting material were collected at the scene and will be sent to the WSP Crime Laboratory for analysis to identify a make and model of the running vehicle.

WSP detectives are seeking any additional identifying information from witnesses or person(s) with knowledge of this collision.   Please contact Detective Jeff Rhue (425) 508-1052 or jeff.rhue@wsp.wa.gov.
