According to Darrington Fire District 24, via a statement on their Facebook page, that at approximately 8:13pm this evening, Darrington Fire along with several mutual aid Snohomish County Fire agencies responded to a report of a blocking collision involving a flammable liquids tanker semi and a pickup. Units arrived to the 42600 block of SR-530 NE in Darrington to find heavy damage to both vehicles with active fire involvement on the semi. Crews quickly extinguished the fire. The semi tanks were empty with the exception of residual gasoline and vapors (still dangerous).
Each vehicle had a single occupant. The driver of the semi was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Unfortunately, the occupant of the pickup succumbed to their injuries.
via Twitter reported that – “The road will remain blocked for quite sometime for the investigation. There is not an explosion risk and no evacuations are needed.”
via Twitter reported that – “You’re looking at the front end of the exploded gasoline tanker truck. Darrington fire chief just told me it’s a miracle the semi driver survived. The cab is completely melted.”
The tanker truck driver escaped unhurt, but the driver of the pickup truck died at the scene.
SR 530 is expected remain shut down for several hours while troopers investigate and clear the scene. Drivers are urged to use alternate routes.
